“Functional feed materials” is the Dutch term for what is referred to in international language as “functional feed ingredients”. These ingredients are feed materials as defined in Animal Feed Market Regulation (EC) No. 767/2009.
A specific effect or claim can be attributed to these feed materials. In order to be allowed to make a claim on animal feed, a company is obliged to comply with Article 13 of the above-mentioned Animal Feed Market Regulation. All claimed properties of the functional feed material are substantiated and are subject to the supervision of the competent authority.
The so-called Feed Material Catalog (Regulation (EU) No. 68/2013) is the official list of approved feed materials. This is a non-exhaustive list prepared for labeling purposes. These and other feed materials included in the so-called Feed Material Register may only be placed on the market if they are safe and healthy and have no adverse effect on the environment or animal welfare. Feed materials from the Feed Materials Register may also not contain chemical impurities from the production process or from technical aids.
